Once you've created the the five-volume definitive guide to cooking via the scientific method - Modernist Cuisine: The Art & Science of Cooking - what do you do next? For chefs Chris Young and Grant Crilly and photographer Ryan Matthew Smith, it was to work with Substantial to launch ChefSteps, a free-to-learn culinary school teaching the hows and whys of cooking to the world. As long as you're curious, it doesn't matter whether you're a professional chef, a culinary student, or an ambitious home cook.

The ChefSteps team and Substantial worked closely together over a short intense period that embodied the values of both parties - experimental, rigorous, and lightning-fast. ChefSteps incorporates a minimal, responsive design, creating an instructional experience that works as well on a phone or tablet as it does on a laptop. The food and the cooking are the stars here, offering up delicious recipes through a combination of videos and gorgeous photography that make even sophisticated techniques like sous vide cooking easy to understand. Directions are concise and video-based, further simplifying perceived complexity.

Chris Young, Managing Director of Delve Kitchen and ChefSteps.com described the collaboration as, "the ideal partnership. In Substantial we found a partner that understood our goals and was capable of matching our intensity and focus on creating a culinary learning experience unlike anything else online. Indeed, our development team at Substantial felt like a natural extension of our culinary team at ChefSteps."

ChefSteps and Substantial are monitoring traffic, interest, and user feedback, with plans to continuously enhance the ChefSteps experience through the next weeks and months. Follow our progress at Chefsteps.com.
